There comes a moment in every crocheter's life when he has so much yarn that he doesn't even know where to put it. Of course, despite this, there is always one more skein that needs to be bought: either because we fell in love with its color, or we need to replace what has run out. I often have problems with colors when re-purchasing or ordering, as I throw the yarn packaging and its color code into the selective bin at the first opportunity. At one point I put the packaging aside and glued a piece of yarn to it, but I ended up throwing it away because it was so opaque and took up a lot of space. It occurred to me during such sorting and tidying that these color codes should be collected in some practical form, which can help me if needed, but is transparent and does not take up much space. That's when my gaze went astray my temperature blanket color scale. A super practical solution is to punch a hole in the edge of the paper and string a piece of yarn by subbing, then write the code next to it. So in this article I will show you step by step how you can make your own color code collection from your favorite yarns!

When is it worth making a color-coded collection of yarns?

I think for almost everyone have one or two standard yarns that you like to work with, and like an old, good acquaintance, he always understands the word. Most likely most of these yarns end up on our shelves, in our crochet box, in our drawer, and in this department, for the first time, the yarn chaos or disorder. Me my three favorite yarns I'm always happy to work with: Schachenmayr Catania Originals, Drops Paris and the Himalayan Dolphin Baby. I think this method is more applicable to the first two types of yarn, since the chenille falls off easily, I'm breaking my head there in a different way, so that I could store the colors systematically for later purchases. The question may arise, why is it not produced on such a large scale, in a version that can be purchased? First, as far as I know in principle, only the manufacturer of the yarn can make a color code set from his own yarn. On the one hand not available from all brands such a shade of cardboard, on the other hand, when I searched I saw that there are companies such as On Etsy who make these - in principle, it couldn't be - and yes they ask for a huge amount for each set of color codes. They ask HUF 15-30 thousand for the purchase of a complete collection. Of course, there are certainly smaller packages and other designs, but I don't think it's more profitable to make your own anyway.

How was my own color code collection made?

Tools required for preparation:

        • your favorite yarn brand yarnai (ie your own stock)
        • 1 eye marker with clip
        • 200g A4 sheet(s)
        • some kind punching tool (or a single-hole punch or anything that can be punched nicely)
        • pencil, pen or alcohol felt tip

Preparation process:

        1. The I cut strips of paper of equal size from A4 paper. They are mine 4.5 cm wide and 13 cm high strips, on which I was able to thread 12 threads belonging to the color code. After cutting out the strips a I marked every centimeter on the longer side.
        2. One for punching for the first time leather punch I used it, which has different sized heads. I chose the ideal size for me and the I punched holes in marked places. Second time I used a single hole punch. My problem with the first punching was that I was able to make the holes accurately, but it was very difficult to punch them, with the second technique I couldn't punch accurately, but the holes were of the right size for tying.
        3. If you have the holes, then you write the color code of the yarn next to each hole and thread the yarn into the hole. I cut the yarn by wrapping it around my ruler three times and cutting it so that three pieces of yarn of the same size let me get Then using a crochet hook I pulled the half-folded threads of yarn halfway through the needle and threaded the end of the yarn into the resulting loop, then pulled it tight (i.e. I was drunk).
THE at my own scale, as I know that Catania is never enough, so I looked for the Scales published by Schachenmayr and based on that I wrote them down in order. That way similar colors appear nicely next to each other on the pages, which make searching even easier. Therefore I only wrote the color codes on the paper with a pencil, then when I threaded the thread and wrote over it with alcohol felt. In this way, I gave myself the opportunity to make changes if I might not want to do it according to this methodology in the future. I tried to cut the yarn ends to one length at the end.
        4. Once the colors have been applied to the papers, all that's left is to thread your papers. I came up with the solution to this I punched out the corner of the tiles in one place, and then threaded an eye marker with a clip into it. It's also good because you can expand the pages later, or maybe you can store the color palette of several types of yarn on one eye marker.

Summary

This a hand-made collection of color codes is not only very attractive, but can be a practical accessory for any crocheter. After all, if we look at a sample and the designer gives us the color codes we can check if we have it in stock, or if you want to order again, you don't have to look for the paper for the yarn, but you just have a quick look at your collection to see which ones to order. Me also very useful as a designer, since I often intuitively get a yarn from my basket when designing, and then incorporate it into my latest pattern. However, when I write the pattern, I realize that again I did not write down which color code I worked with. Now I just get my color code collection and compare it with the one on the figure, so the code I used will definitely be included in the pattern. So far, I have managed to make one for Schachenmayr Catania Orisinals, but I will definitely make one for my Drops Paris yarns as well. It's never too late, start creating your own color code collection today!

EAs a little help, I made a printable template for the color code collection, if you feel like it. One 8 tiles fit on an A4 sheet, and you can thread 10 yarns per tile then as you like. The document It also contains 2 pages, on one of which you can find a cover on which you can write the name and dimensions of the yarn, on the other, only the tiles needed for lacing are included.
