Cord yarns (3 mm and 5 mm thick)

The next stage of my experience with yarns is cord yarns. During my career related to crocheting, I often feel that it is necessary to look into other sectors as well. Even though I'm not there to make crocheted figures, I still need variety. If a crocheter mainly deals with making figurines, he tends to forget that you can make other great things from yarn, not just huggable cuddly things. So with this article, I would like to open a new perspective for those who have not tried cord yarns and show what can be made using this yarn.

In terms of the composition of cord yarns, they are typically of mixed material, because most of them use it in different proportions cotton and polyestert. This is typically due to the fact that a the outside of the yarn is made of cotton and it is filled with polyester filler. These cord yarns are made using the i-cord technique (such as a device known as a horn or nail) and the hollow interior is filled with some kind of filler. Depending on the weave of the base cord, the thickness of the yarn will be the same. So far I came across 3 mm, 5 mm and 9 mm cord, but other sizes may exist. These yarns can also be found only in cotton, e.g. Bobbiny cord yarn is also very popular in our country, which is made entirely of recycled cotton and has an OEKO-TEX certificate. Typically, however, you can find polyester filler under the cotton cover.

PRO

🔘 The first and most important - especially for products made for babies - We can also find varieties with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification on the market, i.e. they can be used especially for babies and toddlersand products made from them. This is especially important when we are thinking about decorating a baby's room!

🔘 Very durable yarn, thus, the lifetime of the finished product is eternal life plus 1 day, if it is not affected by an effect that destroys it (e.g. it does not catch fire). The composition of the cord yarns is different proportions of cotton and polyester. The outer part, made with the icord technique, is usually made of cotton, while the filling is typically polyester. The proportions are determined by the thickness of the yarn, however, in all cases tit can be used as an art object, so it is an ideal choice for this purpose!

🔘 Objects with different postures can be made from it: if you use a smaller needle, the crochet will have a stiffer, stronger hold, while if you use a larger needle, you will get a looser result. So the same you can use the yarn in several ways, which can only be limited by human imagination.

🔘 I think one of the biggest advantages is combinability. Based on the size, different brands can be used almost unnoticed within a project, you just have to pay attention to the size of the yarn (e.g. look for 3 mm cord yarn if you started working with it). This way, the crocheter does not despair, if the given color cannot be found from one brand, as it can easily be replaced by another, unlike other yarn types.

🔘 Large selection of colors of them, different brands can usually be combined. We can make objects and tools of various colors from it. In fact, what is very tempting to me is that a gradient version is also available, so we can create truly unique (and, by the way, enviable) pieces either as gifts or for personal use.

🔘 Endless possibilities for use in the household. You can read more about this below!

🔘 An excellent choice of yarn for beginner crocheters! Due to the thickness, the art of crocheting can be mastered better, and stringing is guaranteed not to occur due to the icord surface covering the yarn. Starting with this yarn, the basic crocheting steps can be learned and even a beginner can easily achieve a sense of success!

CONS

🔘 Most of them are not exclusively made of natural materials, although, as I mentioned with the PROs, there is a version made of completely recycled cotton, but its price is higher than that of its combined counterparts.

🔘 What was unusual for me was its stiffness. At first it was more difficult for me to work with him, because this yarn did not slide so easily on the needle, and it also cut my hand, but this can probably be attributed to the fact that I tried to crochet it tighter as I am used to amigurumi.

🔘 Another difficulty for me was the beautiful processing of the yarn, especially regarding the thicker type. However, I believe this could be a user error, and I found this part difficult due to insufficient technical knowledge.

🔘 Cord yarns are generally more expensive than other yarns, however, due to their durability, I think the price-value ratio is very good. You can also choose cheaper and more expensive types of this type of yarn, depending on the composition and brand.

Usage and personal experiences

Even at the beginning, when I started crocheting regularly and the world of Instagram caught my eye, I came across this yarn and the creations that can be made from it. I was completely enchanted by the multifacetedness and the thousand faces of this hobby, how many things can be crocheted. At that time, I was in a hurry and, according to my heart, I would have mastered all the techniques immediately, but obviously time was a bottleneck even then. However, I couldn't resist something and instead of adding it to my rather long bucket list, I immediately set about implementing it.

ZI ordered sinor yarn for the first time to make a super crocheted bag, however, when the yarns arrived, I was shocked that I should have chosen the thinner one, not the thicker one. Of this my first crocheted yarn holder was the super end result of an order that went wrong. Later, a second one was made from it, and I have kept some of my yarns in them ever since.

THE with the second order, it was already possible to order the yarn of the right thickness, from which I made my wonderful tulip bag, which I have been using ever since and I am not a little proud to admit that I arouse the admiration of acquaintances and strangers. Many people asked me where I bought it, because they really like it, and when I said that I didn't buy it, I made it, people were completely amazed. Anyone who doesn't crochet won't say that I didn't get it in a store, but that the piece was made with my own hands. My mother-in-law was the same way, and as soon as she saw my new bag, she placed her order for her own, which I have since made and she is very happy to wear it. Based on my experience, objects made of cord yarns can really withstand anything. I didn't think a melon would fit in my tulip bag, but it did! If you are interested, read how my beautiful bag was made Recommended crochet pattern: tulip bag c. my article, where you can see the case of carrying a melon among the picturest too.

EdUntil now, I have only made two things from thicker (5 mm) and thinner (3 mm) cord yarn, but I can say that an infinite range of possibilities opens up for those who once get the hang of cord. I also collected everything you could make with this yarn on a pinterest board, how many possibilities it holds and last but not least the with tapestry technique with ready-made pieces, you can really show off your crochet skills in front of everyone.

OVERALL

I think a really exciting way out of the world of amigurumi is to try braid yarns. I'm glad I dabbled in it and I'm sure these two projects won't be the first or last of this type of yarn was made, but also I will crochet many other useful items from them. It is certain that the crochet made from this yarn will be very durable, íif you like anything that can be made from this yarn, don't hesitate and start this yarn adventure! With this yarn, the crocheter can quickly create something for herself, be it a home decoration or a stylish accessory, with which she can tell the outside world that with her dexterity she can create not only cute, but also really useful and stylish things.
