About sensory toys
Perception is a fundamental thing for many of us, as we see, hear, touch, smell and taste every day. However, it is the way of perception is not the same for everyone, since the functioning of our brain, and thus perception, is different for each person. Our senses include not only those mentioned, but also balance and body perception.
Are children with different neurological development (and adults alike), for whom perception is different due to this difference. Many times for them disturbing factor related to one perception, such as. loud noises, the texture of certain foods, or flashing lights. Related coming from the environment or from your own organization the difficulty of processing stimuli is called sensory integration disorder. The name and description of the diagnosis originates from America in the 1970s Named after Anna Jean Ayres, to the creator of the Ayres therapy.
Sensory toys are meant to engage and continuously train these senses. Games for children with sensory processing disorders help develop their visual, auditory and tactile processing skills, as well as their fine motor skills. The color, shape, and feel of these toys develop children's basic abilities and stimulate one or more of the child's senses. The development of the little ones in this direction is very important, because they are needed these types of stimuli are essential for understanding their environment and for brain development. The sensory experiences that children acquire during the first three years have a long-term impact on their lives (source: Okosjáték.hu)
About the Fidgee crochet pattern
This crochet pattern serves as a base for making a sensory toy. The pattern can be modified and supplemented as needed, for which I give tips and ideas in the pattern. Making the game aims to help a child/adult living with a neurodiverse/sensory integration disorder or with anxiety, for this reason I offer several variations in this free crochet pattern. Although the pattern can be modified as needed, my copyrights do not change. Please mark me as the designer of the pattern after making it!
What you will need to make it:
- 2.5 mm crochet hook (or 3 mm if required)
- hairy (/eyelash) yarn (50 g / 115 m; thin (2) yarn) - whatever color you want
- if you feel that the 2.5 mm crochet hook is tight, you can also crochet with a 3 mm crochet hook
- this can be replaced with any soft yarn of similar thickness!
- thin cotton yarn (50 g / 125 m; thin / sport (2) yarn) - in any color you like (I used 3 colors for mine)
- here you can change the material and thickness of the yarn in some places, you even have the opportunity to use up the remaining yarn!
- black yarn or embroidery thread to embroider the face
- pom-pom maker or a fork to make pom-poms
- filler
The toy I made was made with Alize Softy and Schachenmayr Catania yarn, so its size was 21 cm.
